Short answer, before I unpack it: financing your wedding photography does not have to touch your credit score at all — and even when it might, the effect is usually nothing you'd feel. It depends entirely on how you spread the cost. If you split payments directly through my studio, there's no lender, no credit check, and no report to anyone. If you go through Affirm, that's a lender, and a lender's rules apply. Both are normal. Neither should keep you from booking the photographer you actually want.

I've been shooting weddings in Los Angeles for 17 years, and I'll be blunt about something I see too often: couples talk themselves into a cheaper photographer because of how the money lands in a given month, not because they liked the work better. That's a bad trade. Let me walk you through exactly how each option works so the money stops being the reason you say no.

The two ways my couples spread the cost

At ConneryFilm I offer two paths, and they're genuinely different animals when it comes to your credit.

  • An in-house payment schedule. You put down a deposit to hold your date, then split the remaining balance into scheduled payments that all land before the wedding day. This is between you and me. No third party, no application, no credit pull.
  • Monthly payments through Affirm at checkout. Affirm is a real lender. You apply, they decide, and you pay them over time. This is the one that can involve credit — I'll explain how below.

I wrote a fuller breakdown of the monthly route in how to afford an LA wedding photographer by paying monthly, but here I want to stay tight on the credit question, because that's the thing keeping people up at night.

The in-house plan: zero effect on your credit, full stop

When you book a date with me and set up a payment schedule directly, nobody runs your credit. There's no soft pull, no hard pull, nothing reported to Experian, Equifax, or TransUnion. You're not borrowing money. You're paying me in agreed installments for a service I'm delivering later. That's it.

Here's how it usually looks. A deposit holds the date — and I want to be very clear, the date is not held until that deposit is paid. I've had couples "decide" over a long weekend and lose their Saturday in October to someone who put money down on the Friday. It's not a sales tactic, it's just how the calendar works. Once the deposit is in, we map the balance across the months you have until the wedding. Most of my couples do three or four payments; some do more if they book far out. The way deposits and the balance work is something I laid out in detail in how an LA wedding payment schedule actually breaks down.

One honest note while we're here: a deposit does its job precisely because it's committing. If you're curious about what happens if plans change, I was straight about that in whether LA photo deposits are refundable — the short version is rarely, and that's true across the industry.

Affirm: here's what's actually true about credit

Affirm is where the real question lives, so let me be careful and honest, because I'm the photographer, not the lender — I can't see or control their decision.

When you choose Affirm at checkout, they typically run what's called a soft credit check to decide whether to approve you and on what terms. A soft check does not lower your credit score. It's the same kind of check that happens when a card company sends you a pre-approved offer. You can be checked this way all day long and your score won't budge.

What can affect your credit is the loan itself, once it exists. Some Affirm loans get reported to a credit bureau; some don't, depending on the loan and their current policies. When a loan is reported, the outcome is the boring, sensible one you'd expect:

  • Paying on time is a positive signal. On-time payment history is the single biggest factor in most credit scores.
  • Missing payments can hurt you — same as missing any bill.

So the accurate way to say it is this: Affirm won't ding your score just for applying, and if your plan is reported, paying it on schedule is a neutral-to-good thing, not a risk. What I won't do is promise you'll be approved, quote you an interest rate, or throw out an "as low as" monthly number — that all depends on Affirm's review of your individual situation, and anyone in my seat who pretends otherwise is guessing. For the terms that apply to you, Affirm shows them to you before you commit to anything. I dug into the full picture of the monthly-through-Affirm route in using Affirm for an LA wedding photographer if you want the deeper version.

Being on a plan changes nothing about your photos

This is the part I care about most. Whether you pay me in full the day you book or you spread it across six months, your wedding is identical. Same shooting hours, same me behind the camera, same second shooter if your package has one, same editing, same turnaround. I don't have a "payment plan gallery" and a "paid-in-full gallery." There's one gallery. Yours.

Because we run photography and cinematic video under one roof — one team, one contract, one point of contact — the plan covers the whole thing at once. You're not juggling a photo vendor's schedule against a separate video company's schedule, and you're not stacking two deposits and two balances on two calendars. One plan, one crew that already knows how to move around each other on your wedding day. That coordination is honestly worth as much as the price convenience.

What I'd tell you if it were my own wedding

Spreading the cost of your wedding photography is normal and sensible. Please don't feel weird about it. Most couples I meet are paying for the entire wedding more or less at the same time — venue, catering, florals, the band, the dress, the rings. Photography and film are the two things you keep after every plate is cleared and every flower wilts, and it's completely reasonable to pay for them over a few months instead of in one hit.

If I were choosing between the two paths for myself:

  • If I wanted zero contact with any credit system and had a runway of a few months before the date, I'd take the in-house deposit-and-schedule plan. Simple, private, done.
  • If I wanted to stretch payments further out or preferred a fixed monthly rhythm, I'd look at Affirm, check the terms they offer me, and decide with real numbers in front of me.

Either way, book the photographer whose work you'd hang on the wall. The financing is a detail you solve in five minutes. The pictures are forever. If you're still weighing whether it's all worth it, I made my case in why no couple I've shot ever regretted the photos.

FAQ

Does applying for Affirm hurt my credit score?

Applying typically involves a soft credit check, which does not lower your score. What can affect your credit is the loan afterward — if it's reported to a bureau, paying on time is a positive and missing payments is a negative, just like any other bill.

Does splitting payments directly with ConneryFilm affect my credit at all?

No. The in-house deposit-and-schedule plan has no lender and no credit check. Nobody pulls your credit and nothing is reported. You're simply paying me in installments before the wedding.

Do I get less coverage or slower delivery on a payment plan?

Not a chance. The plan is only about timing of the money. Your hours, your team, your editing, and your turnaround are exactly the same as they'd be if you paid in full.

How much is the deposit, and does it actually hold my date?

A deposit holds the date, and the date isn't reserved until it's paid — someone else can book that Saturday before you do. Deposits generally run in the 25–50% range across LA studios; I break down the specifics in my deposit guide.

Can I be sure I'll be approved for Affirm?

No, and I'd never tell you otherwise. Affirm makes that decision based on your individual situation, and they show you your terms before you agree to anything. If Affirm isn't the right fit, the in-house schedule is always available.

If you've found your date and you're wondering how to make the money work without stress, just ask me — I'll walk you through both options for your specific wedding and there's no pressure either way.
