Violet Cactus Studio

A photographer’s guide to a small Burbank event space built almost entirely out of backdrops.

What it actually is

A storefront event space on a Burbank block, fitted out for parties: hedge walls, gold chiavari chairs, marble bistro tables and a turf patio behind it.

It holds up to 50 guests, which is the whole idea. Showers, birthdays, engagement parties, proposals and brand shoots fit it perfectly, and nobody is ever more than a few steps from the bar.

What makes it unusual for a camera is that the decor is the set. A 16-foot hedge backdrop and a 7-foot circle backdrop mean you never have to hunt for a clean wall, and the room photographs the same at any hour because it is lit from inside.

I photographed and filmed the whole space on the morning of August 28, 2026, styled for a baby shower, so what you see here is how it actually looks when it is dressed.

The hedge walls

The 16-foot hedge backdrop and the 7-foot circle are the reason this room is easy to photograph.

Green fills the frame without going flat, and it flatters almost every colour a party throws at it. Balloons, flowers, gold chairs and pale linen all sit cleanly against it.

It also solves the problem every small venue has: somewhere to stand people. Put a chair in front of the hedge and you have a portrait set that works all day.

The tables

Marble bistro tops, gold chairs and gold flatware, which is a colour scheme that does half the work for you.

Warm metal against white linen photographs richly under the room’s own lights, so nothing needs to be added on the day.

The tables are small and round, which keeps guests facing each other and keeps the candid pictures close.

Mirrors and light

Vine-wrapped mirrors, filament bulbs and string lights, all through the middle of the room.

This is the part of the room that reads warmest on camera after dark, and it is where the best close-ups of drinks and details end up.

The catering counter runs along one side, which keeps the food out of the frame while staying within reach of everyone.

Arriving

A plain Burbank storefront with a green sign, and then the room opens up behind it.

Guests do not see it coming, which is half the pleasure. The sign itself is worth a frame on the way in.

Inside there is a kitchenette and bar for drop-off catering, two restrooms and open parking outside, so the logistics stay out of your pictures.

If you are planning something here

Three things I would tell you over coffee.

Book the room empty first. Twenty minutes before guests arrive buys you every detail shot: the tables, the bar, the backdrops, the cart. Once the room fills, those frames are gone.

Use the hedge for portraits. It is the most forgiving wall in the building and it never goes out of light. Put your family groups there and you are done in ten minutes.

Move drinks to the patio late. The room is best early and the patio is best late. Planning the evening around that gives a photographer two different looks in one booking.

Shooting at Violet Cactus Studio

I photograph and film parties and brand shoots here as one team, so you get both from one person on the day.
