The 7 checks I'd run if it were my wedding
1. Ask for two complete galleries, not a highlight reel
Every photographer's Instagram grid is their best 1% from 50 weddings. That tells you almost nothing. Ask for two full, unedited-selection galleries from multi-day weddings, ideally one that had a night baraat. What to look for: are skin tones consistent from the haldi in daylight to the reception under purple LEDs? Are the candid moments sharp? Did they catch the reactions of parents, not just the couple?
2. Meet the actual person who will shoot your pheras or nikah
I'll be blunt: a lot of big-name studios in Indian cities sell the founder's portfolio and send a junior team. That's not automatically bad, since some junior shooters are excellent, but you deserve to know. Ask in writing: who is the lead photographer on each event, who is second shooter, and whose work is in the portfolio you're looking at.
3. Get the deliverables spelled out in numbers
"Complete coverage" is not a deliverable. A proper quote lists hours or events covered, the number of photographers and videographers per event, roughly how many edited images you'll receive, whether an album is included and how many spreads, the length of the highlight film, and the delivery timeline. For a four-day wedding, 1,500 to 3,000 edited images is a normal range. Much less than that for 30-plus hours of coverage should raise a question.
4. Understand the real price range before you negotiate
Pricing varies wildly, so treat any figure as a rough guide. From what I've seen quoted for multi-day weddings in North Indian cities, photography and video together commonly lands somewhere between about ₹1 lakh and ₹5 lakh, with the most in-demand studios going well beyond that for destination-style productions. Ask which one before you sign.

5. Ask how they handle bad light, specifically

A good answer mentions off-camera flash or video lights, custom white balance, positioning the couple away from the worst color, and shooting RAW. A vague answer about "great cameras" means they're hoping for the best.
6. Check how they work with the family, not just the couple
