Does Sony or Canon take better wedding photos?

Neither, meaningfully. Both make cameras that far exceed what any wedding requires. The photographer's skill, timing, and eye for light decide the quality — not the brand.

Is Canon's color science really better for skin tones?

Canon has a warm, flattering out-of-camera look that many photographers love, and Sony used to lag here. But modern Sony bodies are excellent, and any competent editor matches skin tones in post regardless of brand. It's a starting point, not a finish line.

Should I ask my photographer what camera they use?

You can, out of curiosity, but don't weigh it heavily. Ask instead whether they shoot to dual memory cards and carry backup bodies — that protects your photos far more than any brand does.

What to wear for acting headshots (and what to leave at home)

Almost everyone arrives at a headshot session with the wrong bag. Not because they have bad taste, but because the clothes that photograph well are not the clothes that look best in a mirror, and nobody tells you which is which until you are already standing on the mark.

So: here is what works, why it works, and what to do with the rest of it.

Bring three to five tops, on hangers

Not one perfect shirt. Three to five options, pressed, on hangers, so we can put them under the actual lights and choose together. A colour that looks rich in your bedroom can go flat and grey under a softbox, and the only way to know is to hold it up.

Colour

Solid mid-tones do the work. Jewel colours — deep teal, burgundy, forest, aubergine — navy, olive, warm greys, rust. These sit far enough from your skin tone to separate your face from your body, and far enough from the background to keep the whole frame from going mushy.

Two things to be careful with. Pure white is a bright rectangle under your chin that pulls the eye straight off your face — it can be made to work, but only deliberately. Black disappears into a dark background and can turn you into a floating head; on a lighter setup it is excellent. If you want either, say so beforehand so the background gets planned around it.

Necklines

The neckline is the frame around your face, and it is doing more work than the colour. A crew neck reads clean and slightly younger. A v-neck lengthens the neck and reads more open. An open collar or a henley reads relaxed and grounded. A high turtleneck can swallow a short neck; a very wide scoop can make shoulders look sloped.

Bring more than one shape. Which one suits you is often the single biggest difference between two frames from the same session.

Fabric and fit

Texture photographs. Knit, linen, brushed cotton, denim, anything with a weave gives the light something to do and stops your shoulders reading as a flat block of colour. Smooth synthetics do the opposite — they go plasticky and they shine.

Fit matters more than brand. Clothes that skim the shoulder and sit properly at the collar make a person look composed even when they are nervous, which, in a headshot session, everyone is.

Bring one layer

A jacket, a blazer, an unlined overshirt — something with structure. A layer instantly adds a second look without a full change, and the shoulder line it creates flatters almost everybody. For anyone shooting a professional or procedural type — doctor, lawyer, detective, executive — this is the whole look.

What to leave at home

Logos, slogans and branding. The eye reads text before it reads a face, every time.
Tight patterns. Fine stripes and small checks shimmer on camera and can go genuinely strange under a digital sensor.
Anything brand new. Clothes need one wear to stop looking like clothes and start looking like yours. New shirts also come with fold creases that photograph like scars.
Big or shiny jewellery. It catches the key light and steals the frame. A small piece that is genuinely part of how you dress is fine and often good.
Heavy makeup and strong contour. Studio light is far more forgiving than a phone camera. Anything sculpted for a night out reads as a mask under a softbox.

The night before, and the week before

Haircuts two weeks out, not two days. A fresh cut looks fresh, which is a different thing from looking like you.
Brows two days out. Same reason — the redness needs time to settle.
Sleep. It shows in the eyes more than anywhere else, and the eyes are what casting is actually reading.
Water all day, and go easy on salt and alcohol. Puffiness is real and it is stubborn.
Eat before you come. Two hours is longer than it sounds when you are concentrating.

One thing that matters more than any of this

Wear something you actually own and actually like. A headshot has to look like you on a good day, and there is no wardrobe trick that survives you feeling like you are in costume. If you are torn between the shirt that is technically correct and the shirt you feel like yourself in, bring both — but the second one usually wins.
