The honest answer is that a decent actor headshot session in Los Angeles costs between $300 and $800, the well-known names run past $1,300, and there is a floor of $95–$250 work that is sometimes fine and sometimes exactly what it sounds like. That is a five-fold spread for something every actor in this city has to buy, which is why the question gets asked so often and answered so badly.

Here is what the money is actually buying at each level.

Under $250

Natural light, usually outdoors or against a wall, one look, and two or three retouched files. At this price the photographer is running volume: several people a day, twenty minutes each, minimal direction. You can absolutely get a usable frame out of it — plenty of people have. What you are giving up is control. There is no second look if the first one is not working, and there is rarely a monitor, so you find out how it went when the gallery arrives.

Watch for the two places the price quietly goes back up: per-image retouching fees, where the session is cheap and each finished file is $40–$75, and digital delivery fees, where you pay again to download your own gallery. A $150 session with four retouched images at $50 each is a $350 session.

$300–$800

This is where most working actors land, and it is the range where the session stops being a transaction and starts being a shoot. Expect sixty minutes to two hours, two to four looks, real lighting rather than whatever the sun is doing, and someone actually directing you. Somewhere in here you should also start getting a same-day or next-day proof gallery and a set number of retouched finals included rather than sold back to you.

$900 and up

The premium studios in this city — and there are several very good ones — charge $1,000 to $1,400 for a half-day with unlimited looks, a wardrobe consultation, and often hair and makeup rolled in. You are paying for reputation, for a room that has been dialled in over fifteen years, and for a name that some casting offices recognise. Whether that is worth double is a real question with a real answer, and the answer depends entirely on where you are in your career.

The costs nobody quotes you

  • Hair and makeup — $150–$250 in Los Angeles, and it is a separate booking at most studios. Worth it for a commercial look; frequently skipped deliberately for a theatrical one.
  • Extra retouched frames — $35–$75 each. This is where a session's real price is decided, because you will always want more than the package includes.
  • Reshoots — almost never included, and almost never discussed until you need one.
  • Prints — if you still submit physical 8x10s, budget for a lab.

How to tell expensive from overpriced

Three questions cut through most of it, and you can ask all of them in an email before you book:

  1. "Do I see the frames while we shoot?" A tethered monitor is not a luxury, it is the difference between directing a session and hoping. If you can see what is working, you can fix a collar, a jaw, a dead eye, and shoot it again. If you cannot, you are buying a lottery ticket.
  2. "What is the total, with the number of retouched files I actually want?" Not the headline price. The total.
  3. "How much retouching do you do?" The right answer in 2026 is as little as possible. Casting directors are explicit that they are screening out photographs that do not match the person who walks into the room. Skin texture, freckles and age lines are supposed to survive.

What actually decides whether it was worth the money

Not the camera, not the location, and not the price. It is whether the photograph reads your type in the half-second casting gives it, and whether your eyes are doing something behind them. A $1,200 session that produces a beautiful, empty picture is worse value than a $395 one that gets you seen.
